A Smoothie a Day, Keeps the Dr. Away! :)

These wellness experts share how you can drink your way to good health.
Rich in immune-boosting nutrients, a green drink a day may be the secret to keeping the doctor away this winter. "The most powerful way to up our mineral consumption is to consume a plant-based drink every day, by either blending or juicing vegetables and fruit together," says Kimberly Snyder, nutritionist and detox specialist. Green drinks get their vibrant colour from chlorophyll, a nutrient-rich pigment found in all leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, celery and lettuce, that cleans the body of harmful toxins, oxygenates the blood and helps boost energy levels.

We asked four wellness experts to share their green smoothie or juice recipes.

Some Recipes that will help detox your body

1. Soy Milk Smoothie:

Ingredients:
-1 pear, peeled
-1 banana, peeled
-1/4c plain greek yogurt
-1/4c plain or vanilla soymilk
-2 tbsp. flax seeds.

Directions:
Blend all together.

Why This Helps:
Pears are full of water-soluble fiber, which helps you feel fuller on less calories, and, along with the flaxseeds, will help your digestion system immensely.

2. Garlic-y Mushrooms, Chicken and Kale

Ingredients:
-2 chicken breasts, chopped
-1 pound of chopped kale, without stems
-8 ounces of mushrooms (portabello are the best for flavor)
-6 garlic cloves minced
-Olive Oil

Directions:
1. Brown the cut chicken pieces in a pan, then set aside.
2. Using the olive oil, saute the minced garlic and mushrooms in a pan for about two minutes, or until aroma spreads (yummm). Add in the Kale and make sure to stir often, as to not let one side of the kale get overcooked.
3. At the last minute, add in the chicken and and keep cooking until kale has softened (it will reduce a lot), then serve.

Why This Helps:
Kale is an EXCELLENT source of antioxidants and fiber. It's an excellent source of beta-carotene which has been known to be a major player in the battle against heart disease and cancer), and also contains caroteniods (that protect your eyes from UV rays and cataracts).

3. Mediterranean Quinoa

Ingredients:
-1c quinoa
-2c vegetable broth
-1tbsp olive oil
-1 small red onion, finely chopped
-3 cups of chopped kale, without stems
-1/2c pine nuts or almonds
-1/2c kalamata olives, without the pits.

For the Dressing:
      -1tbsp lemon juice
      -1 small shallot, minced
      - orange zest
      -1/3c olive oil
      -salt and pepper

Directions:
1. Rinse quinoa and combine with vegetable broth in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and cover then simmer WITHOUT stirring for about 15 minutes, or until the broth has cooked down. After another 10 minutes, fluff the quinoa with a fork.

2. While the quinoa is cooking, heat the olive oil in a pan and then saute onions for about 5 minutes, then add the kale. Cook for about anothe 10 minutes, or until the kale has softened, and then set aside.

3. Combine all ingredients for dressing in a small bowl, whisking the oil in slowly.\

4. Toss the quinoa with the Kale mixtures, the nuts, olives, and the dressing. I know the picture has feta cheese, but if you're detoxing, don't add this, it's a very fatty cheese with lots of sodium, although it's delicious!

Why This Helps:
Kale is an EXCELLENT source of antioxidants and fiber. It's an excellent source of beta-carotene which has been known to be a major player in the battle against heart disease and cancer), and also contains caroteniods (that protect your eyes from UV rays and cataracts).
Quinoa is an excellent source of protein and fiber, to help your digestion system as well.

Olive Oil Lemon Juice Cleanse Directions

The value of a digestive system "cleanse" to detoxify the body is controversial, but anecdotal evidence suggests that a short-term cleanse does have benefits in general well-being. One popular detox cleansing drink is the olive oil and lemon juice cleanse. Designed to clean out the liver and gallbladder, this cleanse should be done during a two- to three-day period when you have few obligations, because you'll need to stay close to a bathroom. It's best to begin the cleanse in the morning.

Step 1

Wash the lemons thoroughly. Roll them between your palms or along a counter or tabletop to soften them.

Step 2

Cut the lemons in half cross-wise and squeeze the juice out. A hand-juicer is the easiest way to do this.

Step 3

Pour the juice through a mesh strainer and into your blender. Stop when you have 6 to 8 oz. of fresh juice.

Step 4

Add 1 tbsp. of extra-virgin olive oil. The measurement doesn't have to be exact; you can use a regular spoon if you don't have measuring spoons.

Step 5

Pour 8 oz. of water into the blender with the olive oil and lemon juice, then whirl it until the oil, juice and water are well-blended.

Step 6

Drink the mixture immediately, or it will separate. Make a second batch in the evening, and do not eat anything solid throughout the day. Drink plenty of water, herbal tea and vegetable broth if you get hungry.

Tips and Warnings

  • Prepare your body for the cleanse by eating and drinking only apples and unfiltered apple juice for 24 hours before your olive oil and lemon juice cleanse. Add 1 clove of raw garlic and 1/2 of a peeled and seeded red grapefruit to your cleanse for a little extra vitamin C and fiber.
  • Don't eat anything other than raw vegetables, fruit and organic juices for at least 24 hours after your cleanse.

Liver Flush

The Liver Flush

Many diseases begin because the liver, whose job it is to filter out toxins, becomes overburdened by the overwhelming amount of pesticides, food additives, yeast, and other unhealthy substances we put into it that must be eliminated. Doing a liver cleanse once every three months can be helpful in keeping this problem under control.

Version One of The Liver Flush

The first one is a bit more structured and comes from Polarity Therapy, the great body of work Dr. Randolph Stone, D.O., N.D., D.C., O.M. developed in the earlier part of the 20th century.

First thing in the morning: 2 Tbsp. cold pressed extra virgin olive oil or almond oil, juice of one fresh squeezed organic lemon, fresh squeezed juice of 1-2 organic oranges (optional), 1-4 cloves of fresh organic garlic. (If garlic is too strong, take garlic at lunch time in a salad.) Blend all of the above together and drink. Immediately after ingesting the oil, garlic, and juice blend, drink 2 cups of hot herbal tea, or hot water if tea is not available. Suggested herbal tea: boil ½ finger of fresh organic ginger root sliced into 6-7 pieces with a Tbsp. each of fenugreek, fennel, and flax seed for 3 minutes at a slow boil, and pour this herbal broth into a teapot with 1 Tbsp. comfrey and 1 Tbsp. peppermint leaf.

All of the above is The Liver Flush which should be done for 10-14 days in a row. Drink all the herbal tea you want in the morning – NO sweeteners for at least two hours after the flush.

Midmorning: If hungry, drink fresh vegetable or fruit juice or eat a grapefruit.

Lunch: Fruit or vegetable salad and/or steamed or baked vegetable. Sprouts are good. Midafternoon: Fruit or sprout snack. A few raw almonds or walnuts.

Dinner: Same as lunch. After dinner: Only liquids – no solid food. A mucus-free all vegan diet during the 14 days of The Liver Flush is advised – no meat, eggs, dairy, coffee, alcohol, sugars, refined flours, white rice, and starches like potatoes and corn.

Version Two of the Liver Flush

Is less involved: First thing in the morning: 6 Tbsp. lemon juice, 3 Tbsp. olive oil, 1 small crushed clove garlic, pinch of grated ginger and cayenne, whisk in blender and drink immediately. Do NOT eat for at least 1 hour. Do this for 10 days and repeat a few days each month thereafter.

Morning Drink for Cleansing your Liver

Morning Drink: Lemon Cayenne Water

by jenny sansouci on January 26, 2012

Lately I’ve been starting out every morning with a big mason jar filled with water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper. It’s kind of like the master cleanse lemonade, but with no sweetener. When I drink it, I feel like I start my day with a clearing dose of detoxifying goodness.

Lemon cayenne water is a great way to cleanse your body regularly even when you’re not “on a cleanse.”

Drinking spicy water may sound gross to you, but with the lemon, you’ll actually start loving it. I’ll admit, the first time I did it, I put way too much cayenne in there – it wasn’t pleasant! Now, I just add a pinch, and I love it.

I’ve never actually done a Master Cleanse nor do I necessarily recommend it (it seems like it would be so hard!) but there’s a reason they include the lemon and cayenne in there.

Here’s why:

Lemon juice and cayenne pepper both have anti-fungal, immune boosting, and detoxification properties.

Lemon juice is great for digestion, destroying bacteria and cleansing the system - it supports the liver and kidneys to get rid of toxins.

Cayenne pepper increases metabolism, stimulates the circulatory system, aids digestion, helps regulate blood sugar and more.

Put them together and you have a very powerful cleansing drink!

My usual:

  • About 24 oz of water
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon (sometimes a whole lemon)
  • Pinch of cayenne (enough to feel the heat but not so spicy that it’s hard to get down)

So give it a try! It may become part of your new morning routine.

Detox Vegetable Soup

Detox Vegetable Soup

If you want an incredibly low calorie meal that will keep you full, promote good digestion and provide you with tons of nutrients, you really can’t do any better than this! Loaded with High Fiber vegetables this dish will scrub you clean from the inside out.

ONE WORD OF WARNING: Many people attempt to eat this soup daily without the addition of chicken meat, thinking they are burning fat and that they will drop tons of weight quickly. However, this is a DETOX soup meaning it cleans you out, not burns fat. Further more, if you remove the chicken meat, you take away much of the vital protein, and that is essentially what helps keep you full (not just the fiber from the vegetables). Eating this soup for every meal, everyday, without the chicken (or the addition of beans as a substitute, for example, chickpeas or garbanzo beans) you will not get enough calories, causing your body’s glucose levels to drop (this is your primary source of energy). Low glucose levels, known as “Hypoglycemia”, can cause hunger, headache, dizziness, lack of focus, anxiety and fatigue. Precisely why nobody can stick to only eating the meatless version of this soup for extended periods of time.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups cubed white chicken breast (cooked)
  • 8 medium carrots, sliced
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 4 celery stalks, chopped

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • salt & pepper to taste

Directions:

  • This recipe is simple, in a large stock pot, add all liquid ingredients and bring to a boil.
  • As liquid is heating up add all the other ingredients.
  • Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1 to 1-1/2 hours or until vegetables are tender. Discard bay leaf.
